channeling the 2010s: a fashion throwback worth revisiting

This morning as I perused through British Vogue’s latest issue, I came across a story on their website that brought back all the nostalgic feels: “Channel Your Inner 2010s It-Girl With These Throwback Outfit Pairings”.

Well, nostalgic yes. And also … thought provoking shall we say … WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED IN 2010? And … WHAT THE HECK WAS I WEARING?

Trying to think back to 2010 and to what I wore back then … well, it quickly made me realise that:

1. Is it just me or is it really hard to remember back that far? In my/our defence, it was 14 YEARS AGO and A LOT has happened since then.

2. I definitely remember I had swapped “going out” for early morning swim, bike, run training (I discovered triathlon at the start of 2010 and was instantly hooked!), which meant less “going out clothes” and more, well, LYCRA.

And 3. Said “going out clothes” probably carried over from the 00s (think: skinny jeans, stilettos and, my fave: “going out tops”).

So, 2010, hey!

2010 was the year I turned 27, started a new job as a clinical dietitian, bought my first road bike, learned to ride said road bike with CLIP IN bike shoes and all (well, they were triathlon shoes but heyho!), signed up for my first triathlon, became instantly hooked on, *cough* triathlon, swapped Vogue for Australian Triathlete magazine … and well, my life became a vortex of nothing but SWIM, BIKE, RUN and all things, well … you guessed it … TRIATHLON.

My 2010 quip very quickly became: “Sorry, I can’t. I have training in the morning!”

What else happened in 2010?

Well, it turns out a lot:

  • Justin Bieber released his hit, “Baby”.
  • Prince William and Kate Middleton (now Catherine, Princess of Wales) got engaged.
  • Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman in history to win the Academy Award for Best Director for her film, ‘The Hurt Locker’.
  • The longest match in tennis history happened: John Isner (US) defeated Nicolas Mahut (France) after more than 11 hours of play spanned across 3 days!

A lot of things happened in 2010!

But anyhoo … back to this morning and the British Vogue article.

According to British Vogue 2010 fashion is back, and it’s serving up all of the best bits of that fashion era:

  • Skinny jeans.
  • Fuzzy-texture coats and leopard print coats.
  • Ankle boots.
  • Logo scarfs.
  • Polka-dot prints.
  • Slouchy leather bags.
  • Fitted leather jackets.

Are we really ready to dive back into 2010 fashion?

Well, polka-dot prints still hold a certain charm and I’ll always have a soft spot for skinny jeans, so embracing these trends again might just be more fun than you think.

As British Vogue explains:

“There were a number of 2010s trends that surreptitiously snuck their way onto the spring/summer 2025 runways and – whisper it – they actually looked pretty great.”

So, here’s to dusting off a few old favourites and seeing where the style nostalgia takes us.

To 2010!

x G.
