bloomin’ good fun: the benefits of baby classes

Bloom Baby Classes are back here in Doha, and Miss A couldn’t be happier!

For those with little ones, I highly recommend these classes – they’re fantastic for both bubs and mums.

We’ve signed up for the Monday morning class again this term, and it was pure joy watching Miss A reconnect with her little pals.

She’s now in the Busy Bees class (for babies aged 6 months to walking), and wow, she’s certainly living up to the name.

She’s certainly a “busy bee” – crawling everywhere, meeting friends, and keeping mummy on her toes!

The cute autumn-themed ‘Into the Woods’ photo setup was a hit — she beelined straight for it! Though I’m not sure she was sold on the foxy ears for the end-of-class pic!

So, this got me thinking about some of the benefits of attending these baby classes … because let’s be real: as mums we’re basically the definition of “busy bees” with daily schedules packed to the brim!

But I promise you, attending baby classes is not something you’ll want to miss.

Bloom baby, bloom!

Baby classes offer a range of unique benefits that go beyond just socialising or keeping bub occupied for 45 minutes!

Here are a few standout benefits I’ve seen so far:

  • Early sensory development: Baby classes engage multiple senses — which is obviously the point of baby SENSORY classes. They do this through music, movement and textures, helping to stimulate bub’s cognition and sensory development early on! Miss A was like a, *cough* bee to honey — can’t help myself with all the bee references now! — yesterday when she spotted the bright mini disco light strobe. “BRIGHT LIGHTS. MUST CRAWL TOWARDS THE BRIGHT LIGHTS!
  • Motor skill growth: The classes include music, instruments, toys, displays, bubbles and movement, which help in developing both fine and gross motor skills like crawling, pointing and grasping. Miss A LOVED the bubbles yesterday — a totally new experience for her!
  • Language and cognitive skills: Storytime, music, and even baby sign language help expose little ones to new vocabulary and communication methods, boosting early language skills in a fun, interactive way.
  • Strengthening the parent-child bond: Where possible, dedicating each Monday morning (or whatever day suits you!) to attending a baby class with your little one really does strengthen that parent-child bond. I’ve certainly found this with Miss A — AND have noticed a difference in her interaction and happiness level compared with the kids that came with their nannies (I know, I know … not all parents are able to come along to the classes!). For us, it’s our time together to sing and play. PLUS it helps give me play ideas for when we’re at home.
  • Building routine and structure: Regular classes help toddlers get used to routine and structure, essential skills for daycare, kindergarten, school and beyond.
  • Emotional regulation: Exposure to a group setting and new stimuli teaches little ones to adjust to new environments, grown ups and kids, helping them to begin developing emotional regulation and patience, as well as helping them learn to share. Basically, the beginning of becoming GOOD PEOPLE!
  • Boosting parent confidence: Participating in guided activities definitely boosts confidence in understanding your baby’s needs and development stages, as well as in knowing how to handle your baby! It’s incredible how much more confident I feel now in handling Miss A compared to the first time we had “tummy time” at her Caterpillar Class. Of course, it helps that she doesn’t seem as “fragile” to me now as she did back then. Now I’m a bit more like: “She’ll be right!” Ha! … Well, sort of.
  • Socialising not just for babies, but for parents, too: While these classes help — and are designed — to teach baby social skills, they also help parents socialise with other, well, parents! This provides a great support network of others going through similar life stages and experiences, which is super valuable for combating the isolation and loneliness often felt by parents, especially new ones. One of the best parts of attending the class yesterday: the coffee I had with a couple of the other mums afterwards!

So there you have it — some of the standout benefits of attending baby classes! I’m sure there are many more … but these are just some of the benefits I’ve noticed so far.

Baby classes are definitely more than just a morning of fun — they’re foundational for both baby’s development and the parent’s journey into raising a health, confident, child … basically a good human!
