Did you know that ‘1 in 10 families don’t have enough nappies’!
That’s according to The Nappy Collective, a community-based charity based in Melbourne.
I mean, what do you do when the nappies run out and you don’t have enough money to buy more! I can’t imagine that level of stress.
If there’s not already enough to worry about as a first-time mum, add to that the stress of the cost of nappies (and formula while we’re at it!).
Nappies are expensive.
J and I joked when I was pregnant with Little Miss A that we’d have to toilet train her from birth to well, eliminate, the cost.
I remember, even several years ago, well before I had met J and well before we had Little Miss A, hearing from mums how expensive nappies are.
This one time I took part in this supermarket competition in which you had to fill your trolley with as many things as possible as you raced around the supermarket for 5 minutes (or thereabouts). The winner was the person who collected the highest trolley amount in terms of docket cost/price ($$) in the allocated time. That morning, before it was my turn to race around the supermarket, I remember mums telling me, ‘Go for the nappies!’. And because the winner got to keep the items in their trolley, as the winner, I remember taking several bags of nappies to the home of one of the mums.
Nappies are expensive but they’re a must-have.
And being a necessity — an essential item — means that they’re a huge cause of worry for many parents and families, especially as the cost of living continues to skyrocket!
This is why community-based charities, such as The Nappy Collective, are doing great things in the community.
The Nappy Collective, which was started by a group of mums, launched in 2013 via Facebook
“We began to wonder if there were other parents out there that also had a handful or even half a box of nappies they were unable to use. What if we were able to collect all these left-over nappies and distribute them to families in crisis or in need? Collectively these handfuls of nappies could make a big difference,” they write on their website.
Since its launch in 2013, The Nappy Collective has expanded across Australia and has redistributed more than 4 million nappies to families in need.

“By donating nappies to The Nappy Collective, you are helping to keep disadvantaged little ones clean, happy and healthy.”
Other than donating your left-over nappies to family, friends and others in your community (rather than throwing them out!), with so many families in need these days, this is a very worthy charity to get behind!
