As mummas we wear so many hats! We have so many roles to play.

The Harry Potter House Sorting Ceremony and the famous Hogwarts Sorting Hat has nothin’ on us! 🙂

First and foremost, of course, we’re mummas … and everything that entails.

But we’re also wives, sisters, daughters, friends … cooks, cleaners, organisers, drivers, general household managers … nursing carers, soothers and nourishers … employees, employers …

The list could go on … and on … and on!

But there’s one hat that many of us also wear — many of us are also runners … we’re runner mummas!

There’s something magical about putting on a pair of running shorts, crop top and running single, lacing up the running shoes and heading out the door for a run!

And in honour of Global Running Day (5 June 2024), I’m here to celebrate all the runner mummas out there!

I love, love, love seeing all the other runner mummas on social media — posting about their runs and running goals and achievements.

It’s so inspiring … especially at the moment when I’m working hard to get back into run shape and running post baby! … Not quite there yet, but getting there 🙂

‘a celebration of running’

Global Running Day is a day that celebrates all things running!

It’s a “worldwide celebration of running that encourages people of all ages and abilities to get moving”.

It’s a day that showcases not only the global running community — there are many of us out there! — but also all of the benefits that running brings: physical, mental, social benefits.

Running is such a simple, natural act but something that’s so powerful in its ability to completely transform you!

As stated on the Global Running Day website:

“This day plays an important role, reminding us of the positives that running can offer to our physical and mental health and the power of unification.

“Let’s run together on Global Running Day to celebrate our love of running and take strides toward healthier and more active lives.”

i’m a runner mumma

I’ve been a runner for most of my adult life.

I first started to get back into the sport — or way of life! — at university with my first attempt at the Mother’s Day Classic fun run in Melbourne.

That was my first foray into running longer distances, one which sparked a lifelong love for the sport.

Since then, I’ve run in countless fun runs and parkruns.

I’ve run shorter and longer distances.

I’ve run a standalone marathon (not including the several I’ve run as part of Ironman tri events), a few half marathons and a couple of 30km run races.

30km is probably my favourite distance, other than the half marathon (21.1km).

Running has got me through some highs and also some lows in life.

Running has been my go-to … my celebration and my therapist.

As the saying goes: ‘Running is cheaper than therapy’.

I’ve been a runner most of my adult life and now with Little Miss A here, I’m now a runner mumma!

Hello! Welcome to the runner mumma club. 🙂

why i run

So, in celebration of Global Running Day, why do I run? What’s my inspiration?

I run because it makes me happy.

I run because it makes me believe I can achieve anything I set my mind to.

I run for my physical and mental health.

I run for all the people that can’t.

I run for community and social connection.

And the running community is one of the best there is!

I run to set a good example for my daughter.

I cannot wait to run with little Miss A one day soon!

I run because I can.

I just run.

I’m a runner.

I’m a runner mumma!

And that’s one of my favourite hats to wear as a new mumma.

x G.
