It’s not easy for me to say this …

Well, actually it is.

MAFS, I’m breaking up with you.

It’s not you, it’s me.

Well, actually it’s a little bit me, but mostly you.

In a time when, as a community, we’re collectively outraged by the vile truths that are coming out of Australian politics, why are we still revelling in mindless television shows trash like, Married At First Sight (aka MAFS)?

MAFS: a show that boasts about being “explosive television viewing”, promotes nothing more than infidelity, the ranking of contestants – the men as much as the women – let’s face it, solely based on appearance …

Let that sink in. A ranking system. A RANKING SYSTEM. In this day and age?!  

… and utter disrespect towards each other – again, disrespect towards the male contestants as much as the female.   

In a time when we’re struggling against a corrupt, patriarchal system that has, for decades, turned a blind eye towards victims of abuse, rape and assault, and in a time when we have warriors like Brittany Higgins and Grace Tame fighting for change, why are we still revelling in mindless trash like MAFS?

So, dear MAFS, I’m breaking up with you.

You were once referred to as a ‘guilty pleasure’ but in this day and age – no more.

Because I, for one, can no longer be outraged by the issues facing the community in which we live, while at the same time watching crap like MAFS.
